Rosemont Features & Amenities

For those looking for a quiet neighborhood away from the downtown bustle, Rosemont is ideal. Amazingly, and perhaps thanks to its close proximity to more business-driven neighborhoods, Rosemont is almost exclusively residential. The neighborhood’s origins as a commuter community, putting residents in The District or more commercial parts of Alexandria on a daily basis may have quelled the need for nearby shops and eateries as well. As far as groceries, residents are well served by The Fresh Market and Safeway to the north and Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe’s to the south.

Rosemont Property Values

Always considered a middle-class neighborhood, the architecture is thought of as comfortable before stylish. With very little in the way of condominiums or apartments, Rosemont housing options consist primarily of detached single-family homes with a scattering of rowhouses. Of those the predominant style is Colonial revival, most of which were built in the 1920’s and 1930’s, with a few more built post-war. Mixed in are a fair number of bungalows and foursquares.

Rosemont is now a Nationally-Registered Historic District, but before such time there was no governance over the style and sightliness of buildings, but a ride from one end of the neighborhood to the other will leave you stunned at the vast compatibility of homes throughout. Despite the lack of regulation, the decades-long period of construction, and the mix of architects and builders, Rosemont has incredibly cohesive feel—with enough variation to steer clear of any cookie-cutter vibe.

Rosemont Origins

Before being built up the area now known as Rosemont was comprised of fertile fields and farmland. The southeast corner can be recognized by the cannon that was left behind by General Edward Braddock as he set out for an ill-fated mission in the French & Indian War. A large stone can be found in the area, indicating the original southwest border for the District of Columbia. The land was named ‘Spring Park’ following the Civil war and at the end of the 19th century, streetcars began service through it. In 1908, the realty company that held the property named it Rosemont after the Philadelphia suburb and development began in earnest.

Much like neighboring Del Ray, Rosemont owes its popularity to employment opportunities on Alexandria's riverfront, as well as the electric railway that could quickly shuttle US Government employees to and from home to work and back. The last trolley ran through Rosemont in 1932 at the height of the Great Depression, but by then the neighborhood was well established.

Rosemont Transit & Location

Rosemont can be easily accessed by the King St Metro or the Eisenhower Avenue Metro on the Blue and Yellow Lines. Duke St and Telegraph Rd provide quick connection to the I-495 Beltway.

Rosemont is located in eastern Alexandria and its borders are King St along the southwest, Braddock Rd to the north, and Russell Rd to the west—or Commonwealth Ave, depending on whom you ask.
