Penrose Transit & Location

Penrose has no Metro station, but it is nearest to the Virginia Square Metro on the Orange and Silver Lines. The neighborhood sits in the crook of three highways: Arlington Blvd (Route 50), S Washington Blvd (VA-27), and Columbia Pike (VA-244). All three connect to I-66 and I-395, which provide good access to the District of Columbia and Alexandria.

Penrose Heights is bounded by Arlington Blvd to the north, S Walter Reed Dr to the west, Columbia Pike to the south, and S Washington Blvd to the east.

Penrose Early Days

The history of Penrose is a fascinating one. William H. Butler and Henry Louis Holmes had been farmers and community leaders in Freedman's Village, a settlement built during the American Civil War in hopes of housing freed men and women and providing them with opportunities in employment, education, and training. In 1879, they purchased land in what is now known as Penrose, and invested immense energy into the improvement and development of the land. In 1882, it was platted as the Butler Holmes subdivision.

In the 1960's Butler Holmes was merged with part of Arlington Heights to form Central Arlington, though in 1995, a citizens' initiative moved that the neighborhood's name be changed to reflect the unique history and character of the area. The community decided upon Penrose, which was a reference to a trolley station that once stood in prominently in the neighborhood. The trolley lines which once bustled in and out of Butler Holmes are largely responsible for the growth and development of what Residents now call Penrose.

Penrose is also the source of the first trans-oceanic voice communication, which bounced from the three tower erected within its bounds to Paris' Eiffel Tower.
