Parker-Gray Features & Amenities

Though primarily residential, there are a few spots around Parker-Gray that have residents coming back for more. For breakfast, there’s Blue & White Carry-Out, Mason Social, and Sugar Shack Doughnuts; for lunch, there’s Lost Dog, Dos Amigos and Hawwi Ethiophian; and for dinner and drinks, check out Captain Gregory’s, Bastille, and Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap. For recreation, the neighborhood offers Braddock Interim Open Space Park and the Helen Miller/Bernard Hunter Park. Finally, as one might expect from a neighborhood with such a rich African-American heritage, there is plenty of history and knowledge to be absorbed. The Alexandria African-American Hall of Fame is housed at the Charles Houston Recreation Center and what was originally a segregated library on Wythe St is now the Alexandria Black History Museum.

Parker-Gray Property Values

Housing options in Parker-Gray are primarily simple and modest townhouses and rowhouses—true to their particular styles, but often without much in the way of flourish. The neighborhood’s core consists of frame houses featuring late-19th-century styles, chiefly Queen Anne and Italianate, but has made way when necessary, for a number of larger multiple-occupancy buildings: some breathing new life into the copious warehouses that lined the streets of Uptown.

Parker-Gray Origins

Parker-Gray, once known as the ‘Harlem of Alexandria,’ is a historically black neighborhood named for the Parker-Gray School that once stood within its borders. Like the school itself, the neighborhood has a fascinating history, and the city has made great efforts to preserve this history, particularly by keeping its structures well maintained and, when the time demands, keeping new additions compatible with the old. Parker-Gray was originally included in the designation of the Old Town Historic District, but in 1984, it was given its own specific designation.

Between the days of the American Revolution and the end of the Civil War, the land was occupied by the military and was home to a bakery, a magazine, parade grounds, a hospital, stables, and encampments. The area, originally be known as Uptown, became populated largely by liberated slaves, following the Civil War. In 1920, the city of Alexandria purchased a parcel of land on which the Parker-Gray School was erected. This was the area’s coeducational institution, born of a merger between Snowden School for Boys and Hallowell School for Girls. The new school was named for their respective principals, John Parker and Sarah Gray. After a bit of movement, rebuilding, and renaming, the site of the original Parker-Gray School is now home to the state-of-the-art Charles Houston Recreation Center: rebuilt and opened in 2009.

Parker-Gray Transportation & Location
