Mount Vernon Features & Amenities

The main points of interest in town are Mount Vernon Country Club and George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate. The country club was founded in the early 1960’s with a nine-hole golf course built on one of the plantation’s seven original farms. It has since expanded and now features a pool and other forms of recreation as well as various social opportunities. Washington’s estate was added the National Register of Historic Places in 1960 and has benefited ever since. It includes a museum filled with artifacts and ephemera and visitors can take in his farms and gardens. Recently opened to the public is George Washington’s Gristmill and Distillery, which is included with admission, but can also be toured separately.

In keeping with the natural feel of the area, residents can take advantage of the Mount Vernon Farmers’ Market twice a week: Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.

Mount Vernon Property Values

Mount Vernon is most definitely a residential neighborhood. While some retail and dining options exist in the Mount Vernon community itself, any lack only further promotes the peacefulness of this nature-bound area. Housing possibilities run the gamut in Mount Vernon as residents find themselves at home in a great mix of garden-style condominiums, townhouses, smaller detached houses, and palatial homes that are outdone only by George Washington’s.

Mount Vernon Early Days

Mount Vernon is a gorgeous community south of Alexandria. It is named as you might guess for George Washington’s plantation and estate, which lies within its bounds. George was the most famous Washington to live on and maintain the land, but it had been in his family for some time. It was originally known as Little Hunting Creek Plantation, but before George inherited it, it was renamed by his older half-brother in honor of Edward Vernon, his commanding officer in the British Royal Navy.

Mount Vernon Transportation & Location

Mount Vernon is conveniently serviced by the George Washington Memorial Parkway which provides quick access to Alexandria, Arlington, and the District of Columbia. Residents can also access those points by foot or by bicycle via the Mount Vernon trail: a delightful, paved eighteen-mile trail that cuts through forests and marshes.

Mount Vernon is defined by Huntley Meadows Park to the north, Little Hunting Creek to the East, the Potomac River to the south, and Dogue Creek and Pole Rd to the West.
