Marshall Heights Property Information

It is understandable, given the large span of time over which Marshall Heights was built, that housing styles run the gamut. There are several garden apartment complexes and a good number of brick duplexes, many of which were originally built for sale to African American veterans of World War II. Single-family options include Cape Cods, Colonials, bungalows, and sprawling new two-story houses, as well as townhouses of varying ages and styles.

Marshall Heights History

The neighborhood was quite slow to develop and most of the homes that did crop up were built without the approval. In 1935 Eleanor Roosevelt visited and seeing that residents did not have access to running water or sewer mains, she urged Congress to approve funding for improvements. Since then, development and changes have been likewise slow to take shape, but the neighborhood is nearly fully developed now and it feels like more of a part of the surrounding community.

Marshall Heights takes its name from the hilly terrain typical of the District east of the Anacostia, and from the Marshall family who owned the large Prince George’s County tract where the neighborhood stands. While the neighborhood has a powerful history, it would seem rather young to many. Much of the housing was built in the second half of the twentieth century and it was not until then that most of the houses were connected to the District’s public works.

Marshall Heights Transportation & Location

Marshall Heights has no Metro Station, however, the Benning Rd Metro Station on the Blue and Silver lines is located nearby in the Benning neighborhood.

Marshall Heights is bounded by East Capitol St NE to the north, Southern Ave SE to the east, Finch St SE to the south, and Benning Rd NE to the west.
