Mahaning Heights Housing & Features

Fort Mahan Park takes up a large portion of the Mahaning Heights neighborhood. Within the residential areas, there are a few garden apartment complexes, but housing options consist primarily of smaller apartment buildings and single-family dwellings including frame bungalows and cottages, brick ramblers and Colonials, and the occasional foursquare.

Though the area has plenty of greenspace, the neighborhood's appeal is heightened by Kenilworth Park and the lotuses of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens to the northwest.

Mahaning Heights History

Mahaning Heights derives its name as a hybrid from two names of significance regarding the neighborhood. The land on which Mahaning Heights now stands was owned for a long time by the Manning family and in the early days of the American Civil War, the US Military seized part of it. On it, they built Fort Mahan, named for American soldier and educator, Dennis Hart Mahan. While the fort was kept intact, even after the land was returned to the Mannings, to keep a minimal line of defenses around the district, it soon fell into disrepair and was abandoned. On the site now stands Fort Mahan Park which is maintained and operated by the National Park Service.
