Hyattsville Origins
Hyattsville is named, quite simply for its founder, Christopher Clark Hyatt who purchased a parcel of land there in 1845 and subsequently opened a store and began mail delivery. It was on his application to become postmaster that he officially named the area Hyattsville. After the American Civil War, he and several adjacent landowners began to subdivide and sell parcels of their property, catalyzing a substantial population increase, and leading to the the incorporation of Hyattsville as a city in 1886.
Like many towns and cities just over the District line, Hyattsville was a prime location for those who wished to earn an income befitting a major city, while living modestly and with more space, sacrificing only the time required for a minimal commute. Automobiles were especially prominent in Hyattsville and in 1908, the Carter Motor Car Corporation set up a factory in town, manufacturing hand-made twin-engines cars.
Hyattsville Transportation & Location
Hyattsville is fortunate in hosting two Metrorail stations: Prince George’s Plaza Station and West Hyattsville Station. There are also numerous bus lines and Queens Chapel Rd provides easy access into DC, while East-West Hwy will get residents to Takoma Park, Silver Spring, and other parts of Maryland.
Hyattsville is bounded by University Blvd E to the north, the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River to the west and south, and Baltimore Ave (US-1) to the east.
