In the eastern corner of the community, there are a number of detached houses including Colonials, ramblers, Cape Cods, and Spanish mission-style homes, but the vast majority of Fairfax Village is a condominium community. Laid out in nine distinct sections, there are 660 units within the Georgian garden apartment buildings as well as 160 townhouses. The 54-acre community was built in 1941 to house active and retired federal workers, from staffers to congressmen.

In 1976, the complex was converted from rentals to condominums. Fairfax Village has maintained a strong sense of community over the years, which is outwardly evident in the consistent maintenance of beautifully landscaped grounds. There are large lawns between buildings and adjacent to the community stands Fort Davis Park which boasts beautiful wooded green space.

Fairfax Village has no Metro Station, however, the Anacostia Metro Station on the Green line is located nearby in the Buena Vista neighborhood. Pennsylvania Ave SE is the neighborhood's primary thoroughfare, providing easy access to both the District and Northern Maryland.

Fairfax Village is bounded by Pennsylvania Ave SE to the north, Southern Ave SE to the east, Suitland Rd SE to the south, and Alabama Ave SE to the west.
