Douglass Features&Amenities

Douglass boasts the highest point in all of Southeast DC. Sitting barely a mile south of his homestead, Cedar Hill, the neighborhood is named for American abolitionist, Frederick Douglass. While it is a relatively small neighborhood and almost totally residential, it is well situated near Congress Heights Metro Station, a Giant supermarket, the YMCA, and Anacostia Historic District which serves as the area’s business district. Anacostia is home to the Douglass National Historic Site, the Anacostia Community Museum, Anacostia Playhouse and numerous shops and restaurants.

The surrounding area hosts several public and public charter schools and in the Shipley Terrace neighborhood stands THEARC, which is run by the organization Building Bridges Across the River. THEARC hosts countless programs for young people and adults in an effort to improve the quality of life of Washingtonians on the east side of the Anacostia.
