Columbia Heights History & Housing
Columbia Heights, not to be confused with its identically named counterpart in Northwest DC, takes its name not just from Christopher Columbus, but from two significant transportation sites. In 1808 Congress chartered the Columbia Turnpike Company to build a road from the District, running through Alexandria County, and we know this road now as Columbia Pike. By the early 1900's a trolley line was established between Nauck and Rosslyn and where it crossed the pike, sat Columbia Station.
Columbia Heights was part of a tract once owned by George Washington Parke Custis and over the years, especially thanks to the development of Columbia Pike, homes and businesses naturally began to sprout up; rather than waiting for the area to be fully platted and subdivided.
As with many Arlington neighborhoods, the neighborhood developed significantly in the 1930's and 1940's due to The New Deal and World War II. As hoards of workers came to DC to fill new federal jobs, building opportunities rose as well. Walter Reed Gardens (now Commons of Arlington) and Arlington Village are two garden apartment complexes that were constructed during that era. Because of the role they played as well as their spaciousness and remarkably sturdy construction, they have both been added to the National Register of Historic Landmarks.
Columbia Heights Transportation & Location
Columbia Heights has no Metro station, but the neighborhood's northern border is Columbia Pike which provides access to several major highways leading to the District of Columbia and Alexandria.
Columbia Heights is bounded by Columbia Pike to the north, S Walter Reed Dr to the west, 16th St S to the south, and S Rolfe St to the west.
