Columbia Forest's history begins in the typical Arlington fashion. The land was part of a parcel owned by the crown and later by the Alexander family, and later by George Washington. Moving into the 20th century, however, we find that Columbia Forest is quite the oddball, and delightfully so.
Until 1941, the community had remained, as suggested by its name, primarily a woodland. Zoning regulations designated that only single-family homes could be erected in the area. The opening of the Pentagon and the US entrance into World War II brought with it a huge demand for housing for employees and officers. The Defense Homes Corporation authorized the development of single-family homes to be rented to young, married officers and the planning fell to the Army Corps of Engineers. Following the war, the homes were sold, primarily to returning veterans. Fortunately, the subdivision's planning included curved streets in an effort to save countless trees.
Columbia Forest has no Metro station, but Columbia Pike, which runs along its northern edge provides fast and easy access to the District of Columbia and Alexandria.
Columbia Forest is bounded by Columbia Pike to the north, S Jefferson St to the west, S George Mason Dr to the south, and Four Mile Run to the east.
