Capitol View Features & Properties

The neighborhood of Capitol View was never a singular vision, but rather a gradual coming together of independently owned houses in an otherwise undeveloped area. It was not until the 1930’s that any significant number of residents lived in the area, at which point the name Capitol View came into use as a nod to the spectacular views of of Capitol Hill provided by the neighborhood’s hilly terrain.

The neighborhood hosts a wide variety of single-family housing styles. Among them are Colonials, bungalows, ramblers, Tudors, and Cape Cods. There are also several garden apartment buildings and scores of townhouses. In the mid-1950’s the neighborhood was transformed by the introduction of public housing and it has since come most popularly in the form of townhouses.

On the north side of East Capitol Street NE, one finds Evans Recreation Center and Maya Angelou Public Charter School and on the south side, East Capitol Community Center and DC Scholars Public Charter School.
