Housing options in Brentwood vary and include numerous frame bungalows, I-houses, ranch houses, Cape Cods, and a number of houses with Queen Anne styling. The majority of houses were built during and immediately following World War II, thanks to the flood of workers looking to contribute to the war effort. Brentwood today is an ethnically and culturally diverse place to live, which is unsurprising since Captain Bartlett encouraged the sale of his first homes to government clerks and African-American veterans whom he had commanded during the Civil War.

Brentwood MD History

Like the DC neighborhood which shares its name, Brentwood is named for Brent’s Wood: a mansion built by the District’s first mayor, Robert Brent, as a wedding gift for his daughter. Some years after the American Civil War, the land that is now Brentwood, Maryland was purchased by Captain Wallace A. Bartlett and with hopes of development and subdivision, he formed the Holladay, Mount Rainier, and Brentwood Companies. In 1917, the West Brentwood Improvement Association was formed and its members drew up boundaries and began improvements such as the purchase and installation of ten kerosene lamps. Only four years later Brentwood was incorporated as a town.

Brentwood MD Transportation & Location

Brentwood has no Metrorail station, but it is serviced by a number of bus lines and Rhode Island Ave (US-1) cuts through the southern part of town, providing swift access into and out of the District of Columbia.

Brentwood is bounded by the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River to the north, 34th St to the west, Pennwood Rd to the south, and North Brentwood to the east.
