Popular grocery chain Wegmans is coming to the D.C. area.

It’s happening! Wegmans, the wildly popular grocery chain with a cult following, is coming to the D.C. area. Tenleytown will be the lucky neighborhood with the grocer, as it is set to be in part of the Fannie Mae building.

The deal was announced late Sunday night ahead of the International Council of Shopping Centers’ annual meeting here in D.C.

Wegman’s will anchor a mixed-use development at 3900 Wisconsin Ave., near the new developments in the Glover Park area near the National Cathedral and Sidwell Friends School. The development will be smaller than typical Wegman’s stores, 80,000 square feet as opposed to 150,000 square feet. There’s also plans for a standalone restaurant above the grocery portion of the store, like some in New York state.

The location is the first inside D.C. with others in Alexandria, Fairfax and Lanham. Work on the new store won’t start until late next year and the earliest opening is estimated in late 2021.
