Grab some grub, stop by the seasonal beer garden and explore the rich history in Shaw.

If you’re looking for something sweet, savory, fresh, bubbly or rich in history, Shaw is the place to be. There’s Canteen, a seasonal pop-up beer garden on 9th St. Enjoy 20 craft brews, snacks from Red Apron and refreshingly strong bourbon slushies.

Since last year, Shaw has its very own farmer’s market and it is thriving with delicious produce, cooking demonstrations and great people! Expect to see coffee from Qualia Coffee, baked goods from Bonaparte Bread and much more. The market is located at 925 Rhode Island Ave NW and runs on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Craving donuts? Grab one from (the newly opened as of July) Sugar Shack. Their cinnamon sugar is divine.

Shaw is also home to the Howard Theatre, the August acts include Dru Hill on the 18th and Tamar Braxton on the 26th.

Also, did you know Shaw’s 9th Street is known as “Little Ethiopia?” Sample some delicious Ethiopian food at restaurants and markets like Queen of Sheba, Ghion Restaurant and Lounge, to name a few.

There’s also plenty of places to explore to learn about D.C.’s rich history. If you’re tired of the monuments and want to check out something new, visit the Duke Ellington statue outside the Howard Theatre. The statue was dedicated at the opening of the theater five years ago. There’s also the African American Civil War Memorial, which commemorates over 200,000 soldiers who served in the Civil War. Shaw was named after Robert Gould Shaw, the colonel of the Massachusetts 54th regiment.
