1.  How much can I borrow to buy a home?
When determining how much you can borrow, lenders may consider your income level compared with debt, your employment status and your credit history. Talk to a lender about getting prequalified for a mortgage before you start shopping for your new home. This can make the whole experience go more smoothly.
Military veterans and first-time homebuyers may be eligible for special government-sponsored mortgage programs. Ask your lender what you might qualify for.

2.  How much money do I need to put down?
To get the best rate and terms for your loan, try to put down at least 20 percent of the purchase price. Although a lower down payment won’t necessarily disqualify you, there is a chance that a monthly private mortgage…

1.  They have loads of expertise
Want to check the MLS for a 4B/2B with an EIK and a W/D? Real estate has its own language, full of acronyms and semi-arcane jargon, and your Realtor is trained to speak that language fluently. Plus, buying or selling a home usually requires dozens of forms, reports, disclosures, and other technical documents. Realtors have the expertise to help you prepare a killer deal— while avoiding delays or costly mistakes that can seriously mess you up.

2.  They have turbocharged searching power
The Internet is awesome. You can find almost anything—anything! And with online real estate listing sites such as yours truly, you can find up-to-date home listings on your own, any time you want. But guess what? Realtors have access to even…

The Basics

  • Hire a professional cleaner
  • Make minor upgrades, like new carpet and modern paint colors
  • Plant flowers, trim grass and sweet walkways. The buyer will make a quick assessment from their car, and will often decide there and then whether to look at your house or not.
  • Light it up! Replace those burned-out light bulbs, buy some extra floor lamps and trim the vine growing over your front window. Do whatever you can to let light into the house.
  • Repair all those little things you've been meaning to fix: drippy faucets, stained ceilings, or that back porch gutter that's hanging by a nail.
  • Organize! Especially the pantry, laundry room, cabinets (don't forget under the kitchen sink), and all the other places where clutter has taken…

Best Neighborhoods to Buy in DC 2019

Trinidad | Populated by long-time residents, college students, and young families and couples, Trinidad has been on the rise these past several years. Much of this surge is thanks to the renaissance of the H Street Corridor (aka Atlas District). Though the small neighborhood of Trinidad is almost totally residential, a short leisurely walk will get residents to heaps of great spots including the many offerings of H Street and NoMa, as well as the magnetic Union Market. In addition to Trinidad’s two recreation centers, residents looking to get away from commerce and the other trappings of city life benefit from being flanked to the east by the National Arboretum. Though brick rowhomes are the dominant architecture of Trinidad, the somewhat sudden spike…

homeowner winter checklist

Protecting your home from the winter months is vital. A winter storm or other severe weather conditions can cause real damage to your property. That's why it's very important to prepare your home for the next 4-5 months of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures.

  1. Disconnect and drain all outside hoses, if possible, shut off outside water valves, to prevent hoses from breaking or even worse a busted spigot.

  2. Remove dead or damaged tree branches that would get weighed down with ice or snow and fall on your house - or your neighbor’s.

  3. During cold spells, keep cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate around pipes, specifically those in the kitchen and bathrooms.

  4. Double check downspouts and gutters for leaf build up…

amazon coming to crystal city

Image: Moment Editorial/Getty Images

The big news for Arlington, VA is that the e-commerce colossus, Amazon, has chosen this Washington DC suburb to host its east coast headquarters. More accurately, the enormous project known as Amazon HQ2 has been divided into two parts--one to be run out of Arlington, VA and the other to be run out of the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, NY. Officially, the Northern Virginia HQ2 will be part of what has now been branded National Landing: a sort of Franken-hood comprised of Crystal City as well as parts of Pentagon City and Alexandria’s Potomac Yard.

Not only is Arlington County prime for Amazon, boasting--perhaps for the first time ever--a 20% vacancy rate with regard to commercial real estate. JBG…
