BERKLEY | CATHEDRAL HEIGHTS | CHEVY CHASE | CLEVELAND PARK | FOREST HILLS | FRIENDSHIP HEIGHTS | SPRING VALLEY | TENLEYTOWN | WESLEY HEIGHTS
American University is actually located just south of the neighborhood, in Spring Valley, but AU’s Washington College of Law is in AU Park. Dining and shopping options are somewhat limited, but there are a few fantastic local spots in the Spring Valley Shopping Center. Wagshal's Market may be the best locally owned grocery store in all of Washington, DC, and Crate & Barrel, Tara Thai restaurant, and HomeMade Pizza Company all share the same center. Tenleytown and Friendship Heights are east and north of AU Park, respectively, and offer a great deal of retail options close by. Friendship Park and Recreation Center (also known as Turtle Park) is at the southern end of the neighborhood and the focal point of the community.
American University Park is one of the most suburban-like neighborhoods you can find within Washington, DC. Almost all of the neighborhood is residential and consists of single-family colonial homes built in the 1920’s. Many have been expanded and renovated since then. Most houses and lots are moderately sized, and many are built relatively close to their neighbors, which residents say helps foster community spirit. The neighborhood is known for its well-educated and concerned residents. Most homes sell for more than $1 million, so prices are on the high end in American University Park.
There is no Metro stop in the American University Park neighborhood, but Tenleytown-American University Station on the Red Line is just a few blocks east and Friendship Heights Station on the same line is a little farther away to the north. There are also Metrobus lines that service the perimeter of the area. The Chain Bridge into Virginia and the George Washington Memorial Parkway is less than four miles to the southwest. Massachusetts Ave NW provides a good direct route into downtown DC and River Rd NW and nearby Wisconsin Ave NW offer direct roads to the Capital Beltway, less than five miles away.
American University Park is located in Northwest DC, and its borders are Western Ave NW and River Rd NW to the north, 43rd St NW, Warren St NW, and 42nd St NW to the east, Van Ness St NW to the south, and Massachusetts Ave NW to the southwest.
