Alcova Heights Property Values

Alcova Heights housing options consist primarily of single-family homes, built before 1950. Since then, there has been some infill construction of smaller houses as well as the completion of Dundree Knolls townhouse condominium. Alcova Heights maintains its popularity due to affordable homes on sizable lots. Each house was individually built, so the neighborhood's aesthetic is eclectic rather than streamlined. Styles include bungalows, split-levels, Cape Cods, and Colonials.

Alcova Heights Early Days

"Alcova," like SoHo and NoMa is a clever abbreviation which stands for Alexandria County, Virginia. It was derived by J. Cloyd Byars, the real estate developer responsible for what is now Alcova Heights. He purchased 142 acres in 1921 and after planning and naming the original streets, sold lots at five cents per square foot. Byars' home, which was built prior to the American Civil War, still stands and is the oldest in the community.

By the time Alcova Heights development began, the area was becoming significantly more accessible. The nearest trolley station was less than a mile away and it was bordered by two major highways. A mom & pop bus service cropped up beginning with a single bus and a single driver, running from Barcroft to DC and back.

Alcova Heights Transportation & Location

Alcova Heights has no Metro station, but it is nearest to the Virginia Square Metro on the Orange and Silver Lines. The neighborhood is defined by two major highways: Arlington Blvd (Route 50) to the north and Columbia Pike (VA-244) to the south. Both of these connect to I-66 and I-395, which provide good access to the District of Columbia and Alexandria.

Alcova Heights is bounded by Arlington Blvd to the north, S George Mason Dr to the west, Columbia Pike to the south, and S Glebe Rd to the east.
