Tara-Leeway Heights Property Information

The Tara-Leeway Heights Civic Association represents over 800 homes, all of which are single-family dwellings. Most were built within a few years of World War II and consist of soundly built Cape Cods, Colonials, and ramblers.

Tara-Leeway Heights History

As is common throughout Arlington County, the history of Tara-Leeway Heights is fraught with links to the American Civil War. Prior to secession, several hundred acres, most of which now comprise Tara-Leeway Heights were purchased, lived upon, and farmed by retired whaler, Basil Hall. His house atop Hall's Hill became an instant target after war broke out. Soldiers reported the ability to see ten miles out from the top of the hill. The land was subject to devastation throughout the conflict and Hall ultimately divvied it up and sold it cheaply to his former slaves. The lower part of the hill is now part of the High View Park neighborhood.

For the next forty years, the area remained largely rural. Located just far enough away from railways and other conveniences, it was not seen as an ideal area on which to house incoming government and defense workers. Residents of the area, however, did feel that development would be inevitable and the Tara subdivision (allegedly inspired by Gone with the Wine) was first platted in 1933. Soon thereafter, the Larchmont subdivision was planned.
