Highland Park-Overlee Knolls Property Information

In Highland Park-Overlee Knolls, as in many communities of that era within the DC Metro area, the New Deal initiative, the opening of The Pentagon, and World War II, created a population surge that was met by builders. Most notably, Parkhurst was a community built around a central park area composed of sensibly priced homes at a time when sturdy construction was understood, despite affordability. While the dominant styles in the neighborhood are modest brick bungalows, Cape Cods, and ramblers, a fair number of statelier Victorian Style homes give the neighborhood great character.

Highland Park-Overlee Knolls Early Days

Highland Park-Overlee Knolls is comprised of two subdivisions that came together around 1930 to form one unified civic association. Highland Park was known previously as Fostoria, which owed its existence to the revitalization of a railway. The Washington & Ohio Company purchased a line which had once been used exclusively for military transport and instituted passenger service, attracting new residents and vacationers. It was not until the 1920's that the Overlee Knolls subdivision began to be developed. Likewise thanks to advances in transportation, opportunity for Overlee Knolls development began following the construction of Memorial Drive (now Washington Blvd).

Highland Park-Overlee Knolls Transportation&Location

Highland Park-Overlee Knolls has no Metro Station, but it is nearest to the Ballston-MU Metro on the Orange and Silver lines, which is accessible via N Glebe Rd (VA-120), providing access to the District of Columbia; and to I-395 to the south, toward Alexandria.

Highland Park-Overlee Knolls is bounded by 22nd St N to the north, N Lexington St to the east, Custis Memorial Pkwy to the south, and N Quantico St to the west.
