DC bocce is alive and well with various leagues -- DC Bocce League, Capital Bocce, and DC Bocce Ball League. Bocce is a simple ball toss game that doesn’t require extreme athletic prowess. But it’s not just for old Italian men anymore. In fact, it’s become quite the social sport for a younger generation.

DC Bocce League started in 2004 with 50 players on 10 teams and has grown to over 2,500 players. They have various divisions for the summer in DC, Virginia and Maryland. The Virginia divisions meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in Arlington, while the Maryland division meets in Bethesda on Thursdays. Walter Reed development is forging ahead with strong momentum after nine developers responded to a request for qualifications for overhauling the Bethesda campus, according to the Washington City Paper.

Among the developers interested in Walter Reed developments are: Hines, Roadside Development, Douglas Development, Forest City and Western Development. Allied Patriot, Grid Properties, Republic Properties Corporation, Capston, Quadrangle and Wilkes Company are also very interested in putting their stamp on the property.

Are there armed guards in DC schools? Yes and no. DC public schools do not have armed guards, but some private schools do.

Sidwell Friends School, a selective Quaker private school with a campus in the Tenleytown neighborhood and another campus in Bethesda, employs several armed guards. These guards do not include Secret Service protection for President Obama’s daughters. Rather, the guards exist for the protection of all students who attend the school since many of them have high profile parents.
